Chang Chiu-ling's "Fu on
a White Feather Fan"
Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (A.D. 1555-
1636)
Ming Dynasty
Ink on thin silk. Semi-
cursive script. Hanging
scroll.
136.5 x 60.2cm.
Tung Ch'i-ch'ang, styled
Hsuan-ts'ai, was a native of
Hua-t'ing, Kiangsu. He was
a scholar of superior talent
and ability, passing the
chin-shih examination during
the Wan-li period (A.D. 1573-
1619 ). A great painter and
calligrapher of the Ming
period, his painting is said
to be free and lively, his
calligraphy mature and
stately, his brush strokes
elegant and full. His work
is reminiscent of the great
calligraphers of the T'ang
and Yuan periods.
